Here at the Glowtocol, we enjoy a good luxe skincare ritual, but we also love a simple minimalist routine when pressed for time, on a budget or traveling. If you're just starting out with skincare, a minimalist approach is a great place to begin. By easing your skin in with just a handful of good products, you will quickly be able to see what's working for your skin and what's not. You can always add on later, or you may find that you don't even need to.
We define a minimalist routine as three to five steps daily using about that many products. Those products can vary a bit, based on your skin type and your goals. So, here are some of our best tips for paring down your routine while still getting results.
TIPS FOR BEING A SKINCARE MINIMALIST
1.) Shoot for consistency
Being a skincare minimalist doesn't mean doing the bare minimum but rather doing a minimal number of steps consistently. If anything, paring down our routine means we have less guesswork to do and less excuses not to do skincare every single day.
Because we're relying on just a few steps to keep the skin happy and healthy, it is extra important that we return to our simple rituals on a regular basis. The more consistent we are with a routine, the quicker we see results and the easier it is to maintain them.
2.) Break up your routine into A.M. & P.M. rituals
If you desire a simpler skin care routine but can't imagine eliminating beloved products, another way to minimize is to break up your routine into two smaller ones. For example, your ten-step morning routine could easily be converted into a five-step A.M. routine and a five-step P.M. routine.
While some steps like cleansing and moisturizing should be repeated more than once per day, the truth is that other products like serums, eye creams, facial oils may really only need to be applied once daily to reap the benefits. Additionally, If you currently use multiple serums, be sure to cross-check the benefits and ingredients of each one. You may find that you are doubling up unnecessarily and can eliminate a step.
3.) Invest in a few high quality products
One benefit to a minimalist product routine is that you have fewer products to purchase. This is great news, if you're on a budget. However, if you can afford to put a bit of that savings back into your skincare, we advocate for investing wisely into the products you do use.
While there are some great drugstore products out there, many over-the-counter products can contain a lot of toxic ingredients and other fillers that are a waste of your money. As we age, small batch and professional products are worth the investment because they contain more potent actives and concentrated quality ingredients.
4.) Look for products that multitask
As long as we are investing in skincare we, want to get our money's worth, right? Luckily, skincare technology is always advancing and we are seeing more and more products that do the work of two or three. Some examples of this would be a scrub that doubles as a mask, toner pads that also exfoliate, a mask that doubles as a hydrating overnight treatment or a facial oil that doubles as an oil-cleanser.
It also helps to incorporate one or two serums that address multiple concerns, rather than four or five serums that each address one concern. Vitamin C is an excellent choice for the morning because it helps protect, repair, brighten and promote collagen. For nighttime we like Vitamin A or retinol because it helps to rejuvenate, restore and even out skin tone.
5.) Don't skimp on the self care
Opting for minimal steps, doesn't mean de-prioritizing your skincare or rushing through your self care routine. The skin responds well to TLC, so try to be intentional with each step and pay attention to your skin as you work.
Apply products not just to the face but to the neck and chest as well. Massage your skin as you cleanse.Take time to notice anything that isn't reacting right or producing the desired results. Also take time to notice positive changes and things that you appreciate about your skin.
Make your routine as much about self care, as it is about skincare and we promise you will love the results.
