HOW TO CLEANSE YOUR SKIN LIKE A PRO


Is there anything better than a clean face? We would argue that not much beats that fresh skin feeling that comes from a good face wash. Although it's only the first step in any skincare protocol, cleansing is one of the most important because clean skin makes an optimal canvas for applying rest of your skincare products.


In a professional facial, everything begins with a good double cleanse, typically with more than one cleanser. But you don't have to go to the spa to get that clean facial feeling. We're here to share our favorite pro tips for getting your best cleanse ever.

TIPS FOR CLEANSING YOUR SKIN LIKE A PRO

1.) Choose the right cleanser for your skin type

If you're wanting to get more out of your cleanse, a good place to start is making sure you're using the right cleanser for your skin type and concerns. A common mistake many people make is cleansing with a product that is too drying, which can strip the skin of vital moisture. If your skin feels tight after washing, that's a good sign that your cleanser is not hydrating enough.

Over time, cleansing with the wrong product can lead to irritation, inflammation, flaking and even acne. If your skin is dry, aging or sensitive look for a cream or oil-based cleanser to be your go-to cleanser. If your skin is combination, oily or acne prone, a gentle gel-based cleanser is ideal for daily use.


2.) Alternate gentle and active cleansing

"Active" cleansing refers to using a cleanser that has potent active ingredients such as alpha-hydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic and malic acid to name a few), salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. These ingredient are considered exfoliating and are too aggressive for daily use. Instead, you can treat active cleansing just like a workout for your skin. Do it just a few times per week and give your skin "rest" days before using your active cleanser again. Most professional facials include a gentle cleanse followed by an active one, back to back. 3.) Double cleanse

Double cleansing is an easy skincare ritual that anyone can do at home, to mimic the deep cleaning of a facial treatment. Double cleansing can be too much for most skin types to do every day. However, we love a good double cleanse after wearing makeup or a lot of SPF, to really breakdown stubborn product that sticks to the skin.

Double cleansing is also great to do as a weekly ritual before applying an exfoliating or hydrating mask. By getting the skin extra clean, you ensure that active serums. masks, moisturizers and other products are able to deeply penetrate the skin. Just avoid double cleansing if your skin is sensitive, sunburnt or irritated.


4.) Infuse cleansing with facial massage

Every good skincare routine begins with cleansing, so this is an important time to really start to warm up the skin. Aim to spend at least two minutes on each cleanse and massage the skin gently as you go. A little light massage stimulates natural detoxification from lymphatic drainage, as well as increased circulation to nourish skin cells.


When cleansing, it's also important to use a light touch. Aggressive scrubbing or tugging on the skin won't get the skin any cleaner, but it can potentially stretch or damage the tissue. Gentle pressure is all that's necessary. Thoroughly massage both your face and neck before rinsing.


5.) Change it up with oil cleansing

Because cleansing can be disruptive to the natural pH balance of your skin, it's important to replenish your skin with a hydrating toner and moisturizer after you wash your face. That said, one way to avoid imbalance altogether is to swap your regular cleansing ritual for oil cleansing. Oil cleansing is great for all skin types but especially great for sensitive and/or acneic skin.


By using a facial oil in place of your cleanser, you provide nourishment to the skin and help rebalance your skin's natural oil production. To properly oil cleanse, massage oil into the skin just as you would cleanser for a couple of minutes. Then, cover your face with a warm washcloth and apply gentle pressure for a few seconds. Gently buff away remaining oil with the cloth and rinse if needed.
