At the Glowtocol, we can't say enough about hydration and the benefits of maintaining properly moisturized skin. If we could pinpoint one common mistake that we see most people making with their skincare, it's not incorporating enough hydration.
So many people are afraid to moisturize or just plain think they don't need to. But in fact, adding more moisture to your skincare might just be the game changer that results in plumper, clearer and more youthful looking skin. Still not convinced? Read on for a breakdown of how to do hydration right.
TIPS FOR GETTING HYDRATION RIGHT
1.) Understand that ALL skin types need moisturizer
First things first, let's clear up a common misconception that you only need moisturizer when your skin is dry and should skip it when you are oily or breaking out. This is completely false. The truth is that all skin needs hydration and moisture to perform at optimal levels.
When H20 levels are lacking in the skin, a number of unwanted skin issues can play out, including acne, dull skin, more fine lines and wrinkles, increased sensitivity and redness. In other words, moisturizer is a must. For an in-depth look at choosing the right moisturizer for your skin type, check out our Skincare 101: Moisturizers & Hydrators page for more info.
2.) Don't forget to exfoliate
Sometimes all the moisturizer in the world can't fix dry skin if we've let a buildup of dry, dead skin pile up on the surface. Factors like aging, dry weather and other skin conditions can sometimes cause the skin to slow down its natural shedding processes.
An excess buildup can form and prevent other products from really penetrating the epidermis. When this happens, moisturizers and other hydrators can't really work effectively. The fix is gentle exfoliation. Exfoliating 1-3x weekly can help remove old dry skin cells and promote cellular turnover so that new healthy skin cells can generate and take their place.
3.) Consider boosting with a hydrating serum
If your moisturizer game is on point but you're still feeling dry, a great way to amp up water retention in the skin is with a hydrating serum. These products contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid and other moisture binders, to help lock in hydration and prevent transepidermal water loss.
For best results, you will want to apply your hydrating serum before moisturizer on clean skin. Give your serum a few seconds to absorb but then be sure to apply your cream right after. Hyaluronic acid works best when it has something water-based to bind with, so if your skin is dry, moisturizer is necessary to provide the water component.
4.) Apply generously and re-apply often
The correct amount of moisturizer to apply is probably more than you would think. If you have dry skin or are concerned about aging, you will want to moisturize both in the morning and before going to bed. If your skin is naturally a bit oilier, you may be able to get away with once per day but no less.
All that said, don't be afraid to apply moisturizer generously and more often, if your skin is feeling at all dry. You wouldn't turn down a glass of water if you were feeling thirsty, would you? Then why deny your skin hydration when it feels lacking?
5.) Don't forget the rest of your body
In a dry climate or during dry seasons like winter, it's important not to neglect the rest of your skin. Body care should be treated very similarly to skincare for the face. Regular cleansing and exfoliation will help keep a buildup of dry, itchy skin at bay. Additionally, consider applying a body oil, cream or both after showering to replace lost moisture in the skin and promote repair after exposure to the elements.
