It's no secret that we looooove our skincare gadgets and gizmos at The Glowtocol. That's because the right tool can be a game changer for your skin. In a professional treatment, advanced tools and gadgets do much of the legwork, alongside targeted products, to create glowing skin. The advantage of having a tool or two at home is that for the cost of one facial or a couple of professional treatments, you get to have access to these magical modalities every single day.
When starting to incorporate tools into your skincare, it can be tricky to know where to begin. So we're here to help! Here are some of our top tips for using gadgets and tools in your skincare routine.
TIPS FOR ADDING TOOLS TO YOUR SKINCARE
1.) Invest in one or two good tools
From light therapy to microcurrent, there are so many options on the market that you may feel like you need a whole skincare tool box, but we're here to reassure you that that's not the case. Many gadgets have similar or overlapping benefits, so you if you use more than one, you might be doing unnecessary extra work.
We recommend doing lots of research before choosing your first tool. (See this page for more specifics on the different types of tools and what they work well for.) We advocate for selecting just one tool that targets your specific concerns and spending a couple of months really committing to it. Then, if you find that you really love using one tool consistently, you can always add in a second.
2.) Consistency, Consistency, Consistency As with all skin care, some consistency is required to really reap the benefits of a tool or gadget. While some tools such as microcurrent, produce immediate results for lifting and contouring, other benefits will be more cumulative over time. Therefore it is important to use any device or gadget regularly, as instructed, to really create change in the skin.
With most devices (including LED therapy and microcurrent) it is recommended that you use the tool at least five days per week for the first 30-60 days for best results. This really helps to build a a baseline level of fitness for your skin. Once you have been consistent with your usage for an initial time period, you can start to use your tools less - about 2-4x per week for maintenance.
3.) Incorporate tools & gadgets into your daily and/or weekly routine
A question we get often is: when should I use my tool, if I'm doing skincare? While instructions and best practices will vary slightly from device to device, a good general rule is that the skin should be freshly clean before use. If you are doing your daily routine, start with any cleansing and toning before you use your tool but apply serums and finishing products after.
We also love to mimic the protocol of a professional treatment and include tools in our Weekly Glowtocol ritual. To perform your own mini-facial, you will want to cleanse and exfoliate prior to using your tool and follow with a mask and any finishing products after using the device.
4.) Track your progress and results
When changing up our skincare routine to include a new treatment, it can be hard to know what's working and whether or not we're seeing a difference. Because we look at our skin every day, it can be difficult to see the progressive changes that come with a consistent routine. For this, we recommend taking some before and after pictures.
Remembering that the skin regenerates about every twenty-eight days, you can document progress month-to-month with regular selfies. Be sure to take a couple of photos from different angles in the same location with the same lighting each time. Also check in by touching your skin and noticing if it feels softer, smoother, plumper or tighter, as these are also signs that your skin is benefitting from treatment.
5.) Look for devices that fit your lifestyle
A common obstacle many people are concerned with is finding time to use their skincare tools. While it's great to set aside time each day for your special ritual, that simply isn't realistic for most of us.
If this is you, look for tools that can be used easily in tandem with other tasks. For example, an LED mask can be worn while you read a book, work on your computer or meditate in the morning. Handheld devices can be used while you watch television or while lying in bed before bedtime. You can also look for more time-efficient tools like the NuFace Fix, which features a two-minute timer and only requires only as much time for each treated area.
