SUN PROTECTION 101:
Sun protection is one of, if not the most, important part of any Glowtocol. Because the sun is what ages our skin over time, the more we utilize sun protection, the more damage we can prevent. The more damage we prevent, the happier we will be with our skin for the long term.
When we talk about sun protection we mean a sunscreen product specifically. Unfortunately makeup or moisturizers with SPF often don't cut it in terms of proper coverage. Unless your product can boast 30 SPF or higher and you're using it to fully cover your face, it is likely not enough protection. Especially if you aren't reapplying as the day goes on.
Sunscreen ideally should be broad spectrum - protecting against UVA and UVB. While there remains some debate around physical vs. chemical sunscreens we believe in utilizing a combination of both for optimal protection. If you're unsure about where you stand on SPF and sun protectant ingredients, we encourage you to do research before deciding for yourself.
HOW TO SPF:
SPF should be used daily and should be the last step in your skincare routine, following moisturizer and before makeup. This is one instance where we actually want a generous amount of product, as consistent coverage is key. A quarter-size dollop or more, is ideal for covering your face. We also want to be sure to apply to the neck, back of the neck and our ears.
For true sun protection you will need to re-apply throughout the day. The rule is every couple of hours, especially if you are spending a prolonged period of time in the sun.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
When shopping labels, look at the active ingredients to determine what kind of protection you are getting from the sunscreen. Zinc oxide and titanium oxide are physical blockers and can actually be good for acneic skin. Chemical blockers like avobenzone penetrate the skin and absorb the damaging rays.
Natural sunscreens tend to utilize physical blockers, whereas broad spectrum tends to use both. Also check the number to see what the sun protection factor is. Again, look for an SPF of 30 or higher.
TIPS & TRICKS:
SPF can be a difficult habit to get into because many don't like the way it feels on their face. Our #1 tip when it comes to sun protection is to find a product you enjoy wearing. Otherwise you will never wear it.
While most facial sunscreens are advancing in terms of not being greasy or pore-clogging, they can still feel heavy or sticky due to the ingredients. If this is an issue for you, we recommend adding a pump of your favorite toner, serum or moisturizer. Blend in the palm of your hand and apply. While you want to be careful not to dilute your SPF too much, one little pump of other product can make it feel much lighter on your skin.
