TOOLS & GADGETS 101:
The world of facial gadgets and tools is expansive and becoming moreso every day. We love our tools at The Glowtocol because they are the perfect way to produce treatment room facial results at home. While these treatments can cost hundreds of dollars at a spa, estheticians also retail these tools to clients as a way to help maintain the best results between visits.
From ancient rituals like Gua Sha to modern modalities like microcurrent and LED, these different implements can be used to massage, sculpt, lift and plump the skin non-invasively. The right tool is an investment in your skin that will pay for itself very quickly, if used consistently.
HOW TO USE:
When using a tool, we like to emphasize that consistency is key. Think of using your tools as a workout for your skin. We recommend starting out every day for 30-60 days to truly get a sense of your results and how the tool is working. After you have been using a gadget or tool for a couple of months, you can go into more of a maintenance mode and use it 2-3 times per week for upkeep.
It is extremely important to use your tools according to the instructions and the advice of your skin care professional, with proper complimentary products in order to get the best results. Many professional tools feature a downloadable app, where you can locate instructions and protocols for use. We recommend utilizing this type of support when learning a new device.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
Different tools and technologies do different things, and the options are endless. It can get overwhelming quickly. But to help you narrow it down, here are a few of our favorites tools and what they are good for:
Rollers & Gua Sha Stones: The most natural option when it comes to "devices", these tools are literally made from crystal gemstones. Gemstone tools are used to massage the face, encouraging lymphatic drainage and a natural contouring effect. They can also be used to infuse serums and oils into the skin.
Sonic Smooth Dermaplaning System: This simple device uses vibrating sonic technology to remove dead surface skin and unwanted facial hair. The blades are effective for hair removal but also safe and gentle enough for most skin types. Some manufacturers recommend using these devices as often as weekly for maintenance but we believe using an exfoliating device even once per month is sufficient, especially if you are using any other exfoliation in your routine.
LightStim for Wrinkles: LED Red Light therapy is FDA approved to treat signs of aging and a go-to for creating instant glowing skin. Red light helps temporarily plump the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. However, if used over time, it creates a cumulative effect by stimulating collagen production and cellular turnover.
LightStim for Acne: For clients who struggle with acne and particularly cystic acne, we love the LightStim acne device which utilizes blue light therapy and even a little bit of red light. This version of handheld LED specifically targets acne bacteria and blemishes, reducing both and preventing future breakouts. Light therapy is also amazing for reducing inflammation, so the device helps with calming redness and irritation caused by breakouts. Blue light can be used over the entire face or just for spot treatment as needed.
NuFace Microcurrent: Last but not least, the queen bee of skin care technologies for at home. The NuFace Trinity PRO is microcurrent technology for lifting and toning the entire face. The device targets sagging neck skin, tightens the jowls/jawline and gives the skin an overall more contoured appearance. Because the microcurrent also helps stimulate lymphatic drainage, many of my clients notice an immediate reduction in puffiness in the face which can then make the face appear thinner.
At the Glowtocol we retail only esthetician-strength products, so our NuFace Trinity features 16% more microamps than the same device sold in stores at the same price. We love this device as preventative maintenance for clients of all ages who are serious about their skin care investments. It is a great holistic alternative to more aggressive procedures.
